Hopes, words, and winning!

Introduction

Writing and art can be rewarding. I don’t mean easy wealth, even though the money can happen. Writers and artists create, and their creations can touch the hearts, minds and lives for generations. (And then there’s that Bill Shakespeare guy…)
Editing can be a lot of work. But as a freelance editor, people will send their writing to you, ask you to read on it, and then (sometimes) listen to what you tell them to do. They’ll even pay you!
People make connections and projects happen. I’ve seen movie deals go down (and not in some restaurant in Hollywood or New York). They happen, but you have to be in the right place, and talking to the right people. You need a place where inspiration flows. And you need people who have the skills, talents and connections to help you.
But, that’s the challenge, isn’t it? Where is the right place? Who are the right people? And how do you meet them?
You might hate this answer but… You meet the right people by looking in the right place.
Great, but how do I do that?
Here’s one option.

Here’s one option.
This October, on the Utah Valley University campus, a group of over 400 writers, editors, publishers, movie makers, artists and musicians are coming together. And you can join them.
Long time readers have probably already guessed this. I’m talking about the 10th annual LDSPMA conference. This year’s conference is going to be the best one ever (and I’m not just saying that because I’m on the committee!).

Three years ago, I attended the conference for the first time. I volunteered to help and I’ve never regretted it.
Two years ago, I pitched a book. And it was accepted. That’s right. I talked directly to an editor, and she picked up my book.
Last year, I found myself in one-on-one conversations with both the head of a publishing company and a NY Times best-selling author. A few months later, through a LDSPMA contact, I found the people I need to launch my magazine (link).
What will happen this year? Not sure yet, but with Kristin Yee, Michael McLean, Ally Condie, Brigham Taylor, Kathryn Purdie, and Brandon Mull speaking and teaching in addition to 80 other presenters and 400 or so regular attendees, things are going to get interesting.
Check out the conference. Join us.
Either way, I’ll see you next post.
